It is up to you to educate yourself about foods and their positive, or negative, impact on your health, when managing diabetes. Some foods are helpful for rectifying your blood sugar levels, but others will cause damage.
Even when diabetes makes you feel ill, or steals your appetite, you must take care to nourish yourself regularly, and keep track of your glucose levels. Extended periods of low glucose can leave you feeling dehydrated, so fluids are especially important during this time.
Instead of totally eliminating foods you love, alter them so that they are healthier. A lot of people struggle with their diabetes-related diet restrictions. A majority think that they have to get rid of favorite dishes. Others will ignore the diet restrictions and still consume their favorite foods. The smart thing to do is to find delicious substitutes for your favorite foods. Many favorite foods are able to be diabetes-friendly simply by substituting healthier alternatives where appropriate.
Always have access to your insulin whenever you travel. Never check your insulin in with your luggage because you could end up losing it or expose it to dangerous temperatures. It won’t harm your insulin to keep it on your person, because it can be kept in room temperature for as long as a month without any adverse effects.
Smoking isn’t healthy for anyone but can be even more unhealthy for a person with diabetes. This habit just leaves you open to many poor health issues. Smoking causes your body to become more insulin resistant than normal, and could cause type II diabetes if you don’t already have it.
Being diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t need to be the worst thing ever. Use the insight you have gained here and you will better your chances of dealing with the day-to-day impacts of this very serious condition.
